Dodda Mensinkai (Bell Pepper) Palya

Dodda Mensinkai/ Capsicum/ Bell Peppers often called as an english vegetable  is a native of America. These peppers come in red, yellow, orange and green. Green is the most widely used and the cheapest one amongst all.It is rich in Vitamin C. Increases metabolism, thus helping in weight loss. Acts as an an antioxidant. Capsicum is used in various dishes like curries, soups, chutneys, jams, pickles. The recipe below  is inherited from my Mom. A simple, easy and delicious dry curry.

Ingredients:

Capsicum - 2 cups chopped ( I have used 3 colours)

Tomato - 1 medium chopped

Coconut grated - 2tbsp

Kashmiri chilli powder - 2 tsp

Coriander leaves - 1 tbsp chopped
Seasoning:
Mustard seeds-1/2tsp

Cumin seeds-1/2tsp

Urad Dal-1/2tsp

Red chilli powder-1tsp

Method:
  • Chop capsicum. Take oil in a pan. Add all the seasoning except chilli powder, one by one. When the urad dal gets browned, add the chopped capsicum, tomatoes and saute for a few seconds. Then add the chilli powder and salt.

  • Cover and cook till its done. Care should be taken not to overcook the capsicum.
  • Once its done add the grated coconut and coriander leaves. Check for salt.
  • Dodda mensinkai palya is ready to serve with hot phulkas or rice.
Note:
  • It is not necessary that you use all the colours of bell peppers. It tastes best with the green ones.
