Chilli Tofu

Kitchen Tales celebrates Friendship. Every moment spent with one's friend is special, is like a celebration and is always special. We meet, greet and interact with many people on a daily basis. But not all can be called as friends. "A friend is someone who knows you and loves you just the same!!" I am blessed with such a person in my life. My bestie..We have stood strong by each through our happy and sad days. She has been more than a friend ... just like a sister to me . On this special day I dedicate this post to her. A delicious, nutritious and easy to make recipe that I learnt from her. Love you lots and this one for our togetherness.

Tofu is made from soyabean curd. It is naturally gluten free and low in calories. It contains no cholesterol and is packed with proteins, iron and calcium. If tofu is not readily available or if you do not prefer it, you may replace it with store bought or homemade paneer cubes.

Ingredients:
Servings - 4

Firm Tofu - 1 packet
( If using paneer then
paneer cubes - 400 gms)
 Capsicum - 1 small chopped
Onion - 2 medium diced
Ginger - 1" piece chopped
Garlic - 2 tsp chopped
Green chillies - 2 slit
Crushed pepper - 1 tsp
Soya sauce - 2 tsp
Tomato sauce - 1 tsp ( optional)
Olive oil - 2 tsp
Water - 2 tbsp
Salt as per taste

Method:
  • Dice the tofu into rectangular or square cubes as shown in the pic.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add the diced onions, chopped ginger and garlic.
  • Fry till golden brown on high heat.
  • Reduce heat to medium and add capsicum, slit green chillies and fry till done.
  • Care should be taken not to over cook the capsicum and so as to retain its crunchiness.
  • Pour in the soya sauce and water and stir well for a few seconds.
  • Add in the tomato sauce and stir further, till the veggies are coated well.
  • Salt and crushed pepper can be added at this point.

  • Drop in the tofu and mix gently till well coated.
  • Cover and keep on low flame for 5 mins, so that the tofu absorbs the sauces.
  • Open and give a quick gentle stir on high flame.
  • Garnish with chopped capsicum and serve hot as starters or as an accompaniment  with fried rice.
Note:
  • Care should be taken while adding salt because both soya as well tomato sauce have salt in them.
  • Do not over stir the tofu else it will crumble and get mushy.
  • Since tofu has a bland taste, this recipe tastes best when it is made a little spicy.
  • If you are using paneer then you can tawa fry the pieces before adding.

Happy Cooking!!
